Introduction: why runners should care about these earbuds

The true wireless earbuds market for sports has evolved enormously in recent years. It is no longer enough for earbuds to be sweat-resistant and stay in place: runners in 2026 want a balance between sound quality, smart features like adaptive noise cancellation, safety modes for outdoor running and battery life that can handle the longest training sessions without worry (World Athletics) (ACSM).

The JBL Reflect Flow Pro sit at exactly that crossroads. They are true wireless earbuds that combine JBL's renowned sound with active noise cancellation technology, an Ambient Aware mode designed for outdoor safety, industrial-grade IP68 water resistance and a retention system JBL calls PowerFin, built specifically to stay put during the most intense physical activity.

In this review we analyze every aspect of these earbuds from a runner's perspective. We are not just interested in how they sound on a sofa: what matters is how they perform when you have 10 kilometers behind you, dripping with sweat, wind in your face, needing to hear traffic and wanting the battery to last through your Sunday long run. If you are looking for comparisons with other models, check out our best running headphones guide.

We tested the JBL Reflect Flow Pro over more than four weeks of real training, logging over 200 kilometers with them in a variety of conditions: city workouts, long runs through parks, track intervals, treadmill sessions, rainy days and sub-zero temperatures. This is our complete experience.

What the numbers tell us

Several figures stand out. The 6.8 mm driver is generous for a true wireless earbud of this size, which translates into greater bass reproduction capability. The IP68 rating is the highest you can find in earbuds of this type, above the typical IP55 or IP67. And the 10-hour battery without ANC and 8 hours with ANC places the Reflect Flow Pro in the upper tier of the market, ahead of direct competitors like the Sony WF-SP800N or Jabra Elite 7 Active.

Bluetooth 5.2 ensures a stable, energy-efficient connection, although the absence of aptX or LDAC limits maximum transmission quality to SBC and AAC codecs. For running, where the noisy environment and physical activity make it impossible to appreciate differences between codecs, this is an acceptable trade-off. Design and fit: the PowerFin system for runners

First impressions and unboxing

The charging case of the JBL Reflect Flow Pro is compact and oval-shaped, with a matte finish in quality plastic that inspires confidence. It is not the smallest case on the market, but it fits easily into any trouser or running tight pocket. The magnetic closure is firm and satisfying, and the earbuds sit securely in their wells thanks to strong magnets that align them automatically.

Inside the box you will find the earbuds, the case, a USB-C charging cable, three pairs of silicone tips (S, M, L) and three pairs of PowerFin stabilizers in different sizes. The variety of sizes matters because a good seal is fundamental both for sound quality and ANC performance.

The PowerFin system: how it works

The PowerFin is what sets the Reflect Flow Pro apart from other true wireless earbuds in terms of design. It is a flexible silicone fin that hooks into the upper inner fold of the ear, known as the concha. This fin provides an additional anchor point that complements the ear canal seal from the tip.

The result is a dual-retention system: the tip seals and holds the earbud in the ear canal, while the PowerFin prevents the earbud from rotating, shifting or falling out under the repetitive impacts generated by running. Unlike the ear hooks used by other manufacturers, the PowerFin is discreet, comfortable and does not need constant readjustment.

In our running tests, the system works brilliantly. After finding the right combination of tip size and PowerFin size (which took about five minutes of trying), the earbuds stayed put through every type of workout: easy runs, tempo efforts, 400-meter repeats at maximum sprint, hill sessions, fartleks and sudden pace changes. Not a single adjustment was needed during any session. The sensation is that the earbuds become part of your ear.

Comfort during long sessions

Comfort is good for workouts up to about 90 minutes. Beyond that, as with any in-ear, you may start to feel some ear canal fatigue, especially if you use the largest tip size. For runs longer than two hours, we recommend trying the medium tips even if the seal feels slightly looser: the prolonged comfort outweighs the minimal loss of isolation. You can find more information about the differences between earbud types in our article on bone conduction vs in-ear headphones for running.

The weight of 7.8 grams per earbud is light and barely noticeable. There is no sensation of something heavy pulling downward, which matters when you have many kilometers behind you and overall fatigue amplifies any discomfort.

Sound quality: JBL Signature Sound on the move

General sound profile

The JBL Reflect Flow Pro deliver the sound profile JBL calls Signature Sound, characterized by controlled emphasis on the low and low-mid bass that provides a sense of power and energy without sacrificing vocal clarity and treble. It is a sound profile designed to appeal to the widest possible audience, and it works especially well for rhythm-driven music, which is exactly what most runners use for training.

Bass is the standout strength of these earbuds. The 6.8 mm driver, combined with the good seal provided by the tip in the ear canal, produces punchy lows that you can feel in your chest without distortion or masking the midrange frequencies. For genres like hip-hop, electronic, modern pop or kick-heavy rock, the experience is very satisfying.

The mids are solid with good presence. Vocals come through clear and with sufficient body, which means podcasts and audiobooks are perfectly enjoyable. They are not the most detailed mids on the market, but for sports use they are more than enough.

The treble is present without being aggressive. JBL has opted for a conservative approach to the high frequencies, which prevents listening fatigue in long sessions but may make some instruments lose sparkle in direct comparisons with more analytical earbuds. For running, it is a smart decision: excessive treble combined with the impact of footstrike can become annoying.

Sound while running

This is where the sound evaluation gets interesting, because listening to music sitting on a sofa and listening to it while running at a 5:00 min/km pace are completely different experiences. During running, the impact of your foot hitting the ground generates low-frequency noise that travels through your body to your ears. Heavy breathing adds a constant noise component. And if there is wind, the additional noise complicates the equation further.

With ANC enabled, the JBL Reflect Flow Pro maintain impressive sound quality even at faster paces. The bass remains powerful, vocals are perfectly clear and the overall level of immersion is high. Without ANC, perceived quality drops slightly as external noise competes with the music, but turning up the volume a couple of notches keeps the experience good.

With Ambient Aware mode enabled (which is what we recommend for outdoor running), sound quality is the lowest of the three modes because the microphones introduce ambient sound that mixes with the music. Bass loses some perceived impact and the sense of immersion is reduced. Even so, it is a superior experience to running with headphones without ANC in open mode.

Customization with the JBL Headphones app

The JBL Headphones app lets you customize the sound with a 10-band equalizer. For running, we recommend slightly boosting the 60-100 Hz band (low bass) and the 2-4 kHz band (vocal presence) to compensate for running noise. The app also includes presets like Bass Boost, Vocal and Studio that can serve as useful starting points. Profiles are saved to the earbuds, so you do not need the app open while you run.

Tip for runners: If you use Ambient Aware mode for running, bump up the bass slightly in the equalizer. The external sounds let through by transparency mode tend to mask the low frequencies of your music, and a subtle boost compensates for that loss without needing to raise the overall volume.

ANC and Ambient Aware: the balance between isolation and safety

Active noise cancellation (ANC)

The JBL Reflect Flow Pro feature hybrid adaptive noise cancellation, which means they use microphones both on the outside and inside of each earbud to detect and cancel ambient noise, and the cancellation level adjusts automatically based on the environment.

ANC effectiveness is good, though it does not reach the level of the best travel-focused earbuds like the Sony WF-1000XM5 or Bose QuietComfort Ultra. It noticeably reduces constant low-frequency noise (treadmill motor, gym air conditioning, distant traffic) and partially reduces variable noise like nearby voices or background music.

In a running context, the Reflect Flow Pro's ANC makes the most sense in two scenarios. First, treadmill workouts in a noisy gym: the cancellation eliminates much of the background noise and lets you focus on your music or podcast at a moderate volume. Second, track sessions or controlled environments where you do not need to hear traffic.

We do not recommend using ANC while running on the street or in areas with traffic. The cancellation works well enough to significantly reduce your awareness of your surroundings, which poses a real safety risk. JBL is aware of this and that is why they include Ambient Aware mode as an alternative.

Ambient Aware mode: run safely

Ambient Aware mode is, in our view, the most important feature of the JBL Reflect Flow Pro from an outdoor running perspective. This mode uses the external microphones to capture environmental sounds and play them through the earbuds alongside your music, allowing you to hear cars, cyclists, other runners and any sound relevant to your safety without having to remove your earbuds.

JBL's implementation is good. External sounds are reproduced with enough naturalness and volume for you to react to an approaching vehicle or a cyclist coming from behind. Latency is low and the mix between music and ambient sound is reasonably balanced.

That said, let us be realistic: no electronic transparency mode replaces having your ears completely open. The microphones capture a processed, partial version of ambient sound, with directionality different from your natural hearing. If hearing safety is your absolute priority, bone conduction headphones remain the safest option. But if you want the best possible sound quality without completely giving up environmental awareness, the Ambient Aware on the Reflect Flow Pro is a very reasonable compromise.

TalkThru mode

In addition to Ambient Aware, the JBL Reflect Flow Pro include a TalkThru mode that lowers the music volume and amplifies external sounds, designed for brief conversations without removing your earbuds. For running, it is useful when you cross paths with someone you know and want to exchange a few words, or when you need to ask for directions. It activates with a long press on the left earbud and works instantly.

Water and sweat resistance: IP68 in detail

What IP68 means in practice

IP68 certification is the highest in the international protection standard for portable electronic devices. The 6 indicates total protection against dust ingress (the maximum possible), and the 8 indicates protection against continuous submersion in water to a depth of up to 1.5 meters for 30 minutes under laboratory conditions.

For a runner, this translates into absolute peace of mind when it comes to sweat, rain and any weather condition. You can run through a torrential downpour without the slightest concern for your earbuds. You can sweat intensely during a summer interval session and they will keep working without a hitch. You can even rinse them under the tap after a particularly sweaty workout.

Most sports earbuds on the market offer IP55 or IP67 certifications. The step up to IP68 on the JBL Reflect Flow Pro is significant because it eliminates virtually any water-damage scenario you might encounter while running. It is a specification that gives confidence for the long haul.

Our experience with water and sweat

During our testing period, we used the Reflect Flow Pro in three sessions under moderate-to-heavy rain, multiple workouts in temperatures above 25 degrees Celsius that generated intense sweating, and we rinsed them under the tap on four occasions. The earbuds showed no sign of deterioration or malfunction. Sound, ANC and touch controls continued working normally after each exposure to water.

One important detail: the charging case has IPX5 certification, which is splash-resistant but not submersible. This means you should protect the case from direct rain, although a few drops will not cause any harm. We recommend storing the case in a zippered pocket if you run in the rain. The earbuds themselves, once in your ears, are perfectly protected.

Important: Although IP68 certification allows submersion in water, JBL does not recommend using the Reflect Flow Pro for swimming. The Bluetooth connection does not work underwater and pool chlorine can deteriorate the sealing gaskets over time. The IP68 certification is designed to protect against accidental exposure and extreme sweat, not continuous aquatic use.

Battery and charging: real-world battery life for your workouts

Advertised vs real-world battery life

JBL advertises 10 hours of playback per charge with ANC off and 8 hours with ANC on, plus an additional 20 hours from the case (without ANC) or 16 hours (with ANC). This gives a theoretical total of 30 hours without ANC and 24 hours with ANC.

In our real-world tests at 60-70% volume with Ambient Aware enabled (the mode we use for running), we averaged 8.5 hours of playback per charge. With ANC active at the same volume, the figure dropped to 7.5 hours. Without ANC at moderate volume, we reached approximately 9.5 hours. These numbers are very close to what JBL advertises, which is not always the case with manufacturer claims.

In a running context, these figures are excellent. Even in the most demanding scenario (ANC active at high volume), the 7.5 hours of battery comfortably cover any typical workout, including long runs of over three hours. For most runners doing 45-90 minute sessions, a single charge lasts an entire week of training without needing to recharge.

Quick charge and smart management

The quick charge feature on the Reflect Flow Pro is extremely useful for runners. Just 10 minutes in the case gives the earbuds approximately 1 hour of playback. This means that if you get home, realize you forgot to charge them and need to head out for a run in 10 minutes, you can do so with confidence that the battery will last through your session.

The case charges via USB-C and takes approximately 2 hours for a full charge. It does not include wireless charging, which is one of the few areas where the Reflect Flow Pro fall behind some competitors in the same price range. For most runners this is not a significant issue, but if you are already used to charging your devices on a wireless pad, you will miss the feature.

Battery indicators

The JBL Headphones app shows the battery level of each earbud and the case with percentage-level precision. Additionally, when you place the earbuds in your ears, a voice prompt tells you the remaining battery level. When the battery drops below 20%, you receive an audible alert so you know it is time to plan a charge. These alerts are configurable from the app and can be disabled if you find them annoying during a run.

Connectivity and touch controls

Bluetooth 5.2 and Google Fast Pair

The JBL Reflect Flow Pro use Bluetooth 5.2, the second-latest version of the wireless communication standard. This translates into a stable, energy-efficient connection with good interference tolerance. During our tests we did not experience a single audio dropout, not even while running through areas with high Wi-Fi and Bluetooth signal density like busy urban centers.

Effective range was around 12-15 meters with direct line of sight and about 8-10 meters with the phone in a back trouser pocket and obstacles like your own body between the earbuds and the phone. For running, where the phone is usually in a nearby pocket or armband, the connection is absolutely reliable.

Google Fast Pair compatibility is a practical advantage for Android users: when you open the case near an Android phone, a pop-up notification automatically appears to pair the earbuds with a single tap, without needing to go into Bluetooth settings. The process takes less than 5 seconds. iPhone users follow the traditional Bluetooth pairing, which is also straightforward but requires a couple of extra steps.

The earbuds support multipoint connection, allowing them to stay connected to two devices simultaneously. This is useful if, for example, you listen to music from your GPS watch running Spotify while receiving notifications and calls from your phone.

Touch controls: what works and what does not

The Reflect Flow Pro have touch controls on the outer surface of each earbud. The default layout is as follows:

The controls are customizable through the JBL Headphones app, which lets you assign functions like volume control (up and down with a tap on each earbud) that are not configured by default but that many runners will prefer in order to avoid pulling out the phone.

Touch control sensitivity is a delicate topic with any true wireless sports earbud. On the Reflect Flow Pro, the touch surface is responsive but not overly reactive: it registers intentional taps reliably without being accidentally triggered when you adjust the earbud or wipe sweat. During running, taps register correctly most of the time, though accuracy drops slightly with sweaty hands. This is normal behavior shared by every touch-controlled earbud on the market.

Recommended setup for runners: Configure the right earbud for volume control (single tap: up, double tap: down) and the left earbud for switching between ANC modes. This way you can manage the essentials without pulling out your phone. Track-skipping functions can be handled from your GPS watch or phone.

Frequently asked questions about the JBL Reflect Flow Pro

Can you swim with the JBL Reflect Flow Pro given their IP68 rating?

The JBL Reflect Flow Pro have IP68 certification, meaning they can withstand submersion in water up to 1.5 meters for 30 minutes. This makes them perfect for running in heavy rain and extreme sweat sessions. However, JBL does not officially recommend them for continuous swimming or use in chlorinated pools, since the Bluetooth connection is lost underwater and chlorine can deteriorate the sealing gaskets over time. For running, the protection is absolute: rain, puddles, sweat or even rinsing them under the tap after a workout.

Can you use ANC noise cancellation while running on the street?

Technically yes, but it is not recommended for safety reasons. The ANC on the JBL Reflect Flow Pro is effective and blocks most ambient noise, including cars and cyclists. For outdoor running, use Ambient Aware mode, which lets environmental sounds through while you continue listening to your music. Save the ANC for treadmill sessions or the gym where you do not need environmental awareness.

Do the JBL Reflect Flow Pro fall out during sprints or pace changes?

No. The PowerFin system provides mechanical retention that complements the tip seal. In our tests with 400-meter repeats, fartleks, hill sprints and maximum-effort sprints, the earbuds stayed firmly in place without any adjustment. The key is to spend a few minutes finding the right combination of tip size and PowerFin size from the three options included.

How is call quality on the JBL Reflect Flow Pro?

Call quality is good in quiet environments thanks to the three microphones per earbud and beamforming technology. While running with moderate wind, the other person will hear some background noise but can still understand you. In strong wind, quality drops noticeably. These are earbuds designed primarily for music during running; for frequent professional calls there are better options.

Are the JBL Reflect Flow Pro better than the Shokz OpenRun Pro for running?

It depends on your priorities. The JBL offer superior sound quality with deep bass, ANC and Bluetooth 5.2. The Shokz use bone conduction and leave your ears open, offering more natural safety outdoors. If you prioritize sound and alternate between indoor and outdoor training, go with the JBL. If you always run on the street and safety comes first, go with the Shokz. You can dive deeper into this comparison in our article on bone conduction vs in-ear headphones for running.

Is the 10-hour battery life of the JBL Reflect Flow Pro accurate?

Practically yes. In our real-world tests at 65% volume, we got 9.5 hours without ANC, 8.5 hours with Ambient Aware and 7.5 hours with ANC active. These are figures very close to what JBL advertises. The case provides 2 additional full charges, giving a total of between 22 and 30 hours depending on the mode. The 10-minute quick charge for 1 hour of playback is especially handy for last-minute situations.

Can you customize the equalizer on the JBL Reflect Flow Pro?

Yes, the JBL Headphones app (free for iOS and Android) offers a 10-band fully adjustable equalizer, plus presets like Jazz, Vocal, Bass and the default JBL Signature Sound profile. You can create and save your own profiles. Settings are stored on the earbuds, so you do not need the app open while you run. For running we recommend slightly boosting the bass to compensate for footstrike noise.
