Most runners ignore insoles until the pain shows up. Plantar fasciitis, runner's knee, shin splints — in many cases there is a biomechanical component that a good insole can ease. When do you actually need running insoles?

Before spending money on insoles, answer three questions:

  1. Do you get recurring pain in the sole of your foot, heel, knee or shin? If you do, and the pain is linked to running, an insole can help unload the area.
