The Valencia Trinidad Alfonso Marathon has established itself as one of the fastest and most prestigious marathons in the world. Held every first Sunday of December, this event attracts elite and amateur runners from over 100 countries seeking to beat their personal bests on an exceptionally flat and fast course. Valencia holds the women's world marathon record and has witnessed countless national records, earning it the nickname 'World Record Marathon'.
The city of Valencia provides an unparalleled setting for running a marathon. Its Mediterranean climate ensures mild temperatures in December, typically between 8 and 16 degrees Celsius, ideal conditions for athletic performance. The course runs entirely through the city's paved streets, passing iconic landmarks such as the City of Arts and Sciences, the Turia Gardens, the Town Hall Square and the Marina. The organization deploys a top-level logistics operation with official pacers for multiple target times, aid stations every 5 kilometers with gels, isotonic drinks and water, and comprehensive medical coverage.
The runners' expo, located at the City of Arts and Sciences, has become an event in its own right. During the three days before the race, runners can collect their bib numbers, visit sports brand stands, attend technical talks and enjoy the traditional pasta party. The pre-race atmosphere is electrifying, with thousands of runners from around the world sharing nerves and excitement.
For amateur runners, the Valencia Marathon offers a time limit of 5 hours and 30 minutes, sufficient to complete the race at a comfortable pace. Starting corrals are organized by estimated finish times, ensuring a smooth and safe start. The finish line, located next to the Palau de la Música, provides a spectacular finale with spectator stands, giant screens and a recovery zone with fruit, drinks and thermal blankets.
The event also includes a 10K race held on the Saturday before, allowing companions and runners who prefer not to tackle the full distance to experience the marathon atmosphere. Registration includes the official technical shirt, bib with timing chip, runner's bag, medical insurance and finisher medal. Early registration is recommended as places typically sell out by September.
