About the Race
The Zurich San Sebastián Marathon is a gem of the European marathon calendar. Held in late November in what many consider Spain's most beautiful city, this event combines a spectacular coastal course with the gastronomic and cultural charm of the Gipuzkoan capital. With a limit of 8,000 participants, it maintains an intimate and approachable character that sets it apart from large mass marathons.
Donostia-San Sebastián offers one of the most beautiful settings in the world for running a marathon. The course runs largely alongside the Cantabrian Sea, with views of La Concha Bay, considered one of Europe's most beautiful urban beaches. Runners enjoy panoramic views of Monte Igueldo, Santa Clara Island and Eduardo Chillida's Peine del Viento sculpture while running along the seafront promenade and through the old town streets.
The November climate in San Sebastián is cool and humid, with temperatures between 8 and 15 degrees Celsius. Although rain is common at this time of year, the cool temperatures are favorable for athletic performance. Coastal wind can be a factor on the more exposed stretches of the promenade, so preparation for variable conditions is recommended. The organization maintains all services regardless of weather.
The marathon stands out for its excellent value for money. Registration includes a high-quality technical shirt, bib with timing chip, artisanal Basque-design finisher medal, runner's bag with local products and medical insurance. The runners' expo is held at the Kursaal, the iconic convention center designed by Rafael Moneo located next to Zurriola beach, where runners can collect their materials and enjoy sporting and gastronomic activities.
One of the great attractions of the San Sebastián Marathon is the gastronomy. The city boasts the highest concentration of Michelin stars per square meter in the world, and the pintxos area of the Parte Vieja is the perfect setting to celebrate the race with a culinary tour. Many international runners take the opportunity to combine the race with a world-class dining experience, making this marathon the quintessential runner-foodie destination.
Route & Course
The San Sebastián Marathon course starts from Paseo de la Concha, facing the iconic bay. The first kilometers follow La Concha and Ondarreta beaches before climbing gently toward the Igueldo neighborhood. After descending, the circuit heads east along the Zurriola seafront promenade, passing the Kursaal and the surfers' beach. The route enters the Gros neighborhood and continues to Paseo Nuevo, circling Monte Urgull with open sea views. The middle kilometers run along the Urumea River banks and the residential neighborhoods of Amara and Egia before returning to the center. The second loop repeats part of the coastal route, allowing runners to enjoy the bay views once more. The final kilometers pass through the Boulevard and the Old Town before the finish on Paseo de la Concha. Aid stations every 5 km with water, isotonic drinks, fruit and gels from km 25 onwards.
