About the Race

The Zurich Barcelona Marathon is one of the most spectacular sporting events on the European running calendar. Held in mid-March, it combines a top-level athletic experience with an unrivaled sightseeing route past the most iconic landmarks of the Catalan capital. Each year, around 20,000 runners from over 90 nationalities line up for a race that has grown exponentially in recent decades to become an international benchmark.

The main appeal of the Barcelona Marathon lies in its course, which works as a guided running tour through the city's architectural highlights. Runners pass by the Sagrada Familia, Casa Batlló, the Arc de Triomf, Camp Nou, Torre Agbar and the Olympic Port, among other landmarks. This succession of visual stimuli makes the kilometers fly by and creates an unforgettable experience for those chasing times and those simply looking to enjoy the journey.

Barcelona's climate in March is generally favorable for marathon running, with morning temperatures between 8 and 14 degrees Celsius and low chance of rain. However, the sea breeze can be a factor to consider along the coastal sections of the course. The organization provides official pacers for the most popular target times, from 3h00 to 5h00, fully stocked aid stations every 5 kilometers and medical coverage with over 300 medical volunteers.

The runners' expo is held at Fira de Barcelona and is one of the largest in Europe. During the three days before the race, it offers bib collection, brand exhibitions, expert talks, physiotherapy areas and the traditional pasta party. The international atmosphere is palpable everywhere, with runners from around the world taking the opportunity to combine sport and tourism in one of the most visited cities on the planet.

Registration includes a commemorative technical shirt, personalized bib with timing chip, finisher medal, runner's bag, accident insurance and access to all aid stations. The time limit is 5 hours and 45 minutes, allowing runners of all levels to complete the race without pressure. Places sell out months in advance, so registering before December of the previous year is recommended.

Route & Course

The Barcelona Marathon course starts on Avenida Maria Cristina, next to the Venetian Towers at Plaza de España. The first kilometers run along Gran Vía to Plaza de las Glorias, where runners turn toward the Sagrada Familia. From there, the route descends through the Eixample district to Paseo de Gracia, passing Casa Batlló and La Pedrera. The circuit then heads toward the Camp Nou area and Les Corts neighborhood before descending toward the Diagonal and the seafront. The middle kilometers follow the coastline with views of the Mediterranean Sea and the Olympic Port. The final section rises slightly toward Montjuïc before the definitive descent to the finish on Avenida Maria Cristina. Aid stations are positioned every 5 km with water, isotonic drinks, fruit, gels and sponges at the warmest points.
