I have watched runners with months of serious training end up walking at km 17. The reason is nearly always the same: they went out too fast over the opening kilometres, ran up an oxygen debt by halfway and had nothing left to hold the pace to the finish. Along with hydration, pacing is the variable that most decides how a half marathon ends.

Two big pacing strategies work in a half marathon. Which one suits you comes down to how much racing experience you have and how well you read your own body under pressure.
You run every kilometre at the same pace from start to finish. It is the most reliable option for mid-level runners, because it keeps lactate from piling up and makes the race easy to plan. The catch is the opening kilometres: adrenaline and the pack around you always push you to go out faster than planned.
You run the second half of the race between 30 seconds and 2 minutes faster than the first. This is what high-level runners do, because it squeezes the most out of aerobic efficiency. It demands a very restrained first half, mental discipline and a good feel for your own body. Execute it well and passing other runners over the last 5 km is a hard feeling to beat.
Splitting the 21 km into four blocks with different objectives is the most practical way to execute a good race strategy.
Block 1 — Km 0 to 5: Hold Back and Measure
The most expensive mistake in the half marathon happens in this block. Adrenaline, the pack and the flat opening kilometres all invite you to go out fast. Resist.
Block 2 — Km 5 to 12: Target Pace
The cruising section. Your body is running aerobically now and muscle temperature is where you want it. This is where you should be exactly on target pace, or a touch below it.
Block 3 — Km 12 to 18: The Danger Zone
This is where you find out whether the strategy was right. Glycogen stores start to drop, fatigue builds and your head starts negotiating. If you started well, this stretch is hard but manageable.
Block 4 — Km 18 to 21.1: Push
The last 3 kilometres are a maximum effort. If you have reserves left, this is the moment to empty them. The distance is short enough now to be mentally manageable.

Your GPS watch is the most valuable tool you have in a half marathon, but it can also turn into a source of anxiety if you do not know how to use it.
In cities with tall buildings, GPS can lose up to 50-100 metres of accuracy per kilometre. If your watch beeps km 1 before you pass the official marker, the pace reading is probably a little distorted. The official markers painted on the road are always more reliable than your GPS kilometres.
A typical half marathon has aid stations at km 5, 10, 15 and 20. Decide in advance how you are going to handle each one.

Even pace or negative split: which is better in a half marathon?
For most runners, even pace is safer and produces better results. A negative split is ideal if you have experience and self-control, but it needs a very conservative first half, which can be hard to execute with start-line adrenaline.
How much slower than target pace should I start?
Between 10 and 15 seconds per kilometre slower than your target pace for the first 5 km. That absorbs the adrenaline of the start and lets you speed up with something in reserve in the second half.
Why is km 14-18 so dangerous?
It is the stretch where glycogen stores run out if you went off too hard, the body starts to fatigue and motivation drops. If you reach it with your pace under control and good hydration, it is manageable. If you started fast, it is where a lot of runners fall apart.
Should I watch the pace on my watch or go by perceived effort?
Both. The GPS watch gives you objectivity, but perceived effort is the real signal from your body. On hills and in heat, GPS pace misleads you: use heart rate as a secondary reference.
How do I handle aid stations without losing much time?
Decide in advance which kilometres you will drink at and whether you will walk. Walking for 8-10 seconds to drink properly costs under 15 seconds in total and can save your last 5 km. Use the folded-cup technique to drink on the move.
What happens if I go out too fast in the first few kilometres?
Your body builds an oxygen and lactate debt that you pay back with interest between km 15 and 21. It is the most common mistake and it can cost you 5 to 20 minutes compared with a well-executed even pace.
Should I use my GPS watch for the whole race?
Yes, but do not obsess over it. Check your pace every 1-2 km to make gentle corrections. Looking at your watch every stride creates anxiety and pulls your attention away from your running form and from how you actually feel.
How do I know whether my goal time is realistic?
Use your training pace on long runs: if you run 18-19 km comfortably at 5:30/km, a realistic target is around 1:58-2:00. Subtract 5 to 10 seconds per km from your comfortable training pace to estimate race pace.
