June opens trail running's high season in Spain. The snow retreats from the summits, temperatures rise without the suffocating summer heat, and the calendar fills with legendary races across the great massifs: Picos de Europa, Pyrenees, Sierra de Aralar and Ribeira Sacra.
We've selected the 7 essential races of the month for runners of all levels — from beginners on 10-13K distances to ultra-distance specialists tackling the mythical 74K Travesera Integral. All with confirmed dates, routes verified with organizers, and direct links to the official websites for registration.
Traveserina Picos de Europa
The little sister of the Travesera Integral. 46 km with +4,000 m positive elevation from Sotres (Asturias) to Arenas de Cabrales, crossing the central massif of Picos de Europa. The perfect option for experienced runners who want to test the Picos terrain without committing to the full 74K. The start is early in the morning and most runners finish in 8-12 hours. Limited bibs — usually sell out weeks in advance.
Travesera Integral Picos de Europa
One of the most legendary and demanding trails in Spain. 74 km with +6,560 / -6,585 m elevation, start at 02:00 AM from El Repelao (Covadonga, Asturias) and finish at Arenas de Cabrales. Time limit: 20 hours. This is not a beginner race — it requires a consolidated trail base, alpine night experience and at least 20 weeks of specific training. The Club Peña Santa organization has been perfecting one of the most respected races on the continent for decades.
Burdin Hesiko Mendi Lasterketa
The first prize-compensated mountain race in the Basque Country, held in Gamiz-Fika (Bizkaia). The main course is 37 km with 1,750 m positive elevation, plus a shorter 13 km route for trail beginners. Combines sport, nature and a strong charitable and memorial component. Start at 8:00 AM on June 20. Bibs sell out fast (900+ runners).
Ultra Trail Torla Ordesa
The trail festival of the Aragonese Pyrenees with 5 different distances over 3 days. Friday June 26: KV Arañonera (2.9 km vertical kilometer). Saturday June 27: Ultra de Tendeñera (50K, start 06:00 AM) and Vuelta al Cebollar (25K, 08:00 AM). Sunday June 28: Os Foratos de Lomenás (13K, 09:00 AM). The perfect option to come for the weekend with family and combine distances (the 13K + KV, for example). 930 bibs available in total.
Trail Heroica Sacra
The 5th edition of the trail organized by Club Peña Saltasebes de Chantada (Lugo) crosses the spectacular Sil canyons in the Ribeira Sacra. 4 categories available: Short Trail 12 km, Mid Individual 23 km, Long Individual 33 km and Long Relay 33 km, plus PequeHeroico on Friday June 26 for kids and a 9 km andaina (hiking). Start from Plaza de España in Chantada, finish at Praia da Cova in O Saviñao. Unique landscapes between cliffside vineyards and Romanesque monasteries.
Gran Trail Picos de Europa (GTPE)
National and international trail reference from Benia de Onís (Asturias). 5 distances for all levels: 70K (5,300 m+ elevation), 48K (2,700 m+), 35K (2,200 m+), 22K (1,383 m+) and 10K (500 m+). The 70K starts at 06:00, the 22K at 09:30, the 10K at 10:00. Relay options also available in 70K and 35K. If you've never run Picos before, the 10K or 22K are perfect entry points; if you want a serious challenge, the 70K is one of the most complete on the national calendar.
Garmin Epic Trail Vall de Boí
The Garmin Mountain Festival is one of the most prestigious mountain festivals in southern Europe. Over 2,500 runners and €2,400 in prize money. Four distances: Garmin Epic Trail Marathon 42K, Sky 24K, Speed 12K and Family run (0.6-1.2 km). Held in Barruera, Vall de Boí (Pyrenees of Lleida), in a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its Romanesque churches. Part of the XTERRA Trail Run World Series. If you're looking for the full "festival" experience with DJ, expo and after-race party, this is the trail.

If you've never run mountain: start with a 10-13K (Os Foratos in Ordesa, 10K at GTPE, Speed 12K Vall de Boí or Short Trail Heroica Sacra 12K). Accumulating elevation on asphalt is very different from doing it on technical singletrack — the difference shows from the first kilometer.
If you've already run a short trail: jump to 22-25K (22K GTPE, 23K Heroica Sacra, Sky 24K Vall de Boí or Vuelta al Cebollar 25K). Nutrition and hydration management during the effort comes into play here.
If you come from road marathon and want serious trail: try a 35-42K (35K GTPE, 33K Heroica Sacra, Garmin Epic Trail Marathon 42K Vall de Boí or Burdin Hesiko 37K). You need at least 12-16 weeks of specific adaptation with long mountain runs.
If you want ultra: 50K+ with Ultra de Tendeñera in Torla, the 48K or 70K of GTPE, the 46K of Traveserina and, at the very top, the 74K of Travesera Integral with its 6,560 positive meters. This requires at least a year of trail base and a specific 20-24 week plan.

Which is the best trail running race in Spain in June 2026?
Depends on your level and region. For trail running beginners, the short distances at Garmin Mountain Festival Vall de Boí (12K) or the 10K at Gran Trail Picos de Europa are ideal. For experienced runners, the Travesera Integral Picos de Europa (74K) and the Ultra Trail Torla Ordesa (50K Tendeñera) are the most demanding events.
How long in advance should I start training for a 42K trail or longer?
For trail distances between 35K and 50K, we recommend 14-18 weeks of specific preparation with long runs, elevation simulations and strength work. For 70K+ distances or ultras like the Travesera Integral, the reasonable minimum is 20-24 weeks if you already have a consolidated trail base.
What gear is mandatory in these trail races?
Minimum required gear common to all: trail shoes, hydration pack or bottles (1-2 L), thermal blanket, whistle, charged mobile phone, headlamp for night starts. Events like the Travesera Integral (2:00 AM start) or 50K+ ultras additionally require windbreaker, cap, salt tablets, second thermal layer and rain kit.
Where can I find people to train trail near me?
In the CorrerJuntos app you can see trail meetups near your area and join for free. There are active partner clubs in Andalusia and informal groups in Asturias, Catalonia, Basque Country and Galicia organizing long runs every weekend of June.
