About the Race
Zegama-Aizkorri is, quite simply, the cathedral of world trail running. Since its creation in the early 2000s, this race held in the small Gipuzkoan village of Zegama has become the absolute benchmark for mountain racing at the international level, attracting the world's trail elite and thousands of fans who make an annual pilgrimage to this corner of the Basque Country every May.
The race traverses the Aizkorri mountain range in the heart of Gipuzkoa, and its 42-kilometer course with 2,736 meters of positive elevation gain is a compendium of everything trail running can offer: ancient beech forests, alpine meadows, limestone ridges, technical mountain passages and vertiginous descents that demand as much mental fortitude as leg strength.
The names of the iconic course landmarks are part of the sacred vocabulary of world trail: Sancti Spiritu, Aizkorri, Aketegi, the San Adrián Tunnel passage. Each of these places is steeped in history and the feats of the world's greatest mountain runners who have etched their names into the honor rolls of the Zegama.
The atmosphere in Zegama on race day is indescribable. The entire village throws itself into the event, streets are filled with flags and banners of encouragement, and shepherds from the mountain set up improvised aid stations with Idiazábal cheese and cider. The mountain passes fill with fans who climb up from the early hours to cheer runners at the most demanding points.
For the elite, Zegama is a trial by fire that forms part of the most important global trail running circuits. The course records are held by legends of the sport, and each edition assembles a lineup of favorites that would rival many international competitions. For popular runners, completing the Zegama is one of the greatest satisfactions trail running can offer.
Route & Course
The Zegama-Aizkorri route starts from the center of Zegama village and ascends rapidly toward the Aizkorri mountain range along steep trails through beech forests. The highest point is the summit of Aizkorri at 1,528 meters, from where the route descends along technical rocky ridges to the iconic San Adrián Tunnel passage, a natural cave that cuts through the mountain. The course completes a 42-kilometer mountain circuit with 2,736 meters of cumulative positive elevation, alternating technical mountain trails with more runnable forestry track sections. Aid stations are located every 6-8 kilometers at strategic points along the range, offering water, isotonic drinks, fruit, nuts, cheese and broths.
