About the Race
The Ultra Pirineu is the benchmark ultra trail event in the Catalan Pyrenees and one of the most prestigious in Europe. Based in the town of Bagà, at the foot of the emblematic Pedraforca, this race offers three distances (100K, 68K and 42K) covering the most spectacular trails in the Cadí-Moixeró Natural Park and the Cadí mountain range.
Pedraforca, the twin-peaked mountain that dominates the landscape, is the visual symbol of the Ultra Pirineu and one of Catalonia's most iconic mountains. The 100-kilometer course with over 6,400 meters of positive elevation gain is an ultra endurance test that pushes the physical and mental limits of participants along high mountain trails reaching 2,535 meters in altitude.
The Ultra Pirineu is part of the Spartan Trail World Championship circuit and the Ultra-Trail World Tour, guaranteeing elite participation at the highest international level. The world's best ultra trail runners travel to Bagà each September to compete in a race that combines physical demands, scenic beauty and first-class organization.
September in the Catalan Pyrenees offers ideal conditions for ultra trail: cool but not extreme temperatures, still-long days with good light, and the first autumn colors painting the beech and fir forests. However, the Pyrenean mountain at this time of year can surprise with storms, fog or even the first snowfalls at the highest elevations.
Bagà and the towns of the Berguedà region rally behind the event throughout the weekend. The trail expo, technical talks, family activities and mountain gastronomy create a festive atmosphere that complements the epic nature of the competition. The Catalan trail community, especially active and passionate, turns the Ultra Pirineu into a collective celebration of the love of mountains.
Route & Course
The Ultra Pirineu 100K route starts from Bagà and describes a large circuit through the Cadí-Moixeró Natural Park, circling the Cadí mountain range and passing through iconic mountain refuges such as the Refugi Lluís Estasen and the Refugi de Gresolet. The highest point reaches 2,535 meters at the Bastanist col. Trails alternate between beech and pine forests, alpine meadows and exposed rocky ridges. The cumulative positive elevation of 6,400 meters creates a profile of constant climbing and descending with virtually no flat sections. Aid stations are located every 8-12 kilometers at refuges and strategic points with hot food, fruit, nuts, broths, pasta and drinks. Extensive mandatory equipment is required including complete mountain clothing.
